About Me

Hi, I am Mrs Glynis van Houten, an integrative pcychologist who offers various modalities of psychotherapy to help people make positive life changes and achieve greater peace of mind. With the demands of stressful modern living and the burden of past difficulties and trauma, it’s easy to lose touch with our deeper selves, resulting in anxiety, stress, depression, and loss of general well-being.

My academic background includes a Bachelor of Social Sciences and Honours at UNISA, followed by a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at the University of Free State. I completed my internship at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital and community service in the South African Military. All of my training has been completed through accredited institutions, both locally and internationally.

In my approach as a therapist, I provide a compassionate presence and meet clients where they are, tailoring my therapy to their specific circumstances and needs. I believe that psychotherapy requires active involvement and commitment to change, and I partner with clients on this journey of self-discovery. I use an integration of empirically supported therapeutic approaches, including EMDR, Brain Spotting, BWRT, Hypnotherapy and Transpersonal Psychology, EFT and Matrix Reimprinting, Ego State Therapy, and Somatic Experiencing.

My treatment philosophy emphasizes greater awareness, presence, and mindfulness to help clients break free from feeling stuck and regain a sense of well-being. I strongly value general well-being and a holistic lifestyle and strive to create a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore and discover their true selves.

Thank you for considering me as your pcychologist, and I look forward to supporting you on your journey towards greater well-being.

THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals process and resolve traumatic experiences. EMDR involves using rapid eye movements, tapping, or sounds to stimulate both sides of the brain while recalling the traumatic memory. This process can lead to a reprocessing of the traumatic experience and a reduction in its emotional intensity and associated symptoms. EMDR has been found to be effective for a variety of mental health conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Brain Spotting

Brainspotting is a psychotherapy approach that helps individuals access and process deep-seated emotions and trauma by focusing on a specific eye position or “brainspot.” Brainspotting involves using eye positions to stimulate the brain’s natural self-healing processes and access unresolved emotional experiences. This technique can be effective for treating various mental health conditions, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Brainspotting is often used in combination with other therapeutic approaches to help individuals achieve deeper emotional healing and personal growth.

BWRT

BWRT (BrainWorking Recursive Therapy) is a brief psychotherapy approach that aims to help individuals overcome unwanted emotional and behavioral responses. BWRT works by targeting the unconscious part of the brain that generates the unwanted response and reprogramming it to create a more desired response. This therapy involves a collaboration between the therapist and client to identify the specific triggers and responses that need to be addressed. BWRT is a fast-acting therapy and can be effective for treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, phobias, and PTSD.

Hypnotherapy & Transpersonal Psychology

Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that uses hypnosis to help individuals access their unconscious mind and make positive changes in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This therapy involves a therapist guiding an individual into a state of deep relaxation and suggestibility, allowing them to explore their inner world and access deeper levels of consciousness. Transpersonal psychology, on the other hand, is a branch of psychology that focuses on exploring the spiritual and transcendent aspects of human experience. It recognizes that humans have a capacity for growth beyond the boundaries of the individual self and aims to help individuals connect with their true self and purpose. Hypnotherapy and transpersonal psychology can be used together to help individuals achieve deeper levels of self-awareness and personal growth.

EFT

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a therapeutic approach that involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on a particular emotional issue. EFT is based on the idea that emotional issues are caused by disruptions in the body’s energy system, and tapping on specific points can help release and rebalance this energy. This technique is used to alleviate a wide range of emotional and physical issues, including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and trauma. EFT can be performed with the guidance of a therapist or self-administered by individuals who have learned the technique.

Matrix Reimprinting

Matrix Reimprinting is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals reprocess and release negative emotions and limiting beliefs related to past traumatic experiences. This technique involves accessing and visualizing memories from a safe and detached perspective and then using tapping and visualization to change the emotional charge and meaning of the memory. Matrix Reimprinting expands upon the principles of EFT and incorporates concepts from quantum physics and epigenetics to create a new positive image of the self and future. This technique can be used to address a wide range of issues, including anxiety, phobias, depression, and PTSD.

Ego State Therapy

Ego State Therapy is a psychotherapy approach that involves identifying and working with different parts or “states” of an individual’s personality or ego. Ego states are distinct aspects of an individual’s personality that have their own unique memories, emotions, and behaviors. This approach involves helping individuals recognize and communicate with their different ego states to gain insight into how they interact with each other and how they contribute to current problems. Ego State Therapy can be used to address a variety of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems. This therapy aims to help individuals integrate and harmonize their ego states to promote healing and personal growth.

Somatic Experiencing

Somatic Experiencing is a body-centered therapy approach that helps individuals process and release the physical and emotional effects of traumatic experiences. This therapy involves using awareness of bodily sensations and movements to help individuals tune into their body’s natural self-regulation and healing processes. Somatic Experiencing works by gradually and safely exposing individuals to their traumatic memories while guiding them to stay present and grounded in their body. This approach can be effective for treating a variety of mental health conditions, including PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Somatic Experiencing aims to help individuals develop a greater sense of resilience and self-regulation in the face of stress and adversity.
